Half-sky auroras

18.9.2023 at 21.15 - 23.30 - Oulu (IV)
Marko Haapala

The weather forecast varied throughout the evening and in the end we had to go for a bike ride when there were clouds in the sky and finally chasing a clear sky we were in Nallikari. Appropriately, the sky opened up, although it was clear that more clouds were pushing in from the southwest. It was rotated around the booth of one of the coastguards, because as the evening progressed, it started to get crowded by the lighthouse, even though the perspectives didn't really work to their advantage there. There was enough car traffic and enough wind and finally the clouds blocked the sky and I h...

Half-sky auroras

14.9.2023 at 21.30 - 03.30 - Oulu (IV)
Marko Haapala

Phew! Still, even on 17.9, but at that time it was the so-called a light night and cycling to Oulu started already at 20:00 and the journey was exciting because of the fountains and surprisingly there was no passing water so I showered them. There was no more time to take a breath and the first pictures were taken around the Rautasilla and the sky was still quite light. After a while we were around the park. The exposure bracketing was then in really hard use and it was difficult to be in ten different places at the same time, so I had to quickly take a few series of pictures at one point with...

Half-sky auroras

13.9.2023 at 22.20 - 03.30 - Oulu (IV)
Marko Haapala

It was such a night that once again, 8:30 hours of enthusiastic cycling and outdoor activities of about 70 km were accumulated. In the field next to Salonpääntie in Oulunsalo, I was able to run a little to different perspectives and luckily the fog didn't interfere and I managed just fine with single exposures even though the landscape was a bit dark with no water reflections, but I finally managed to capture the northern lights in that place, which is sometimes quite often in the middle of the fog, or simply doesn't have time to cycle to the place fast enough if elsewhere shoot at the...

Crepuscular rays

15.7.2023 at 00.01 - 01.00 - Oulu (II)
Marko Haapala

Evening and night rolled by again, and Morning Night in Oulu, filming natural phenomena with fountains, etc... Of course, the bike moved diligently through the Ainola park and along the river back and forth. The twilight clouds were surprising and hard to define, even in a small area they tried to illuminate the night clouds, but they didn't capture the pictures properly, but they were above the reddish clouds and soon the lower reddish clouds covered the pearly light streaks.

Primary rainbow

7.7.2023 at 22.00 - 23.55 - Oulu (IV)
Marko Haapala

Phew. First, on the Kempele side, after the early evening, we had to try to photograph the lightning, but we saw flashes of lightning, but no one took pictures. It started to look like the sun was starting to shine and the rain was getting closer and closer and it was a fast bike ride towards Oulu and it was raining on the way and in the middle the sun started to offer a nice ray of clouds from the bunch but no perspectives for filming. At the points of Äimärauti, the rainbow and the sun were already behind the back, but the speed of the bike did not slow down and those racing on electric bike...

Other special clouds

6.7.2023 at 02.35 - Oulu
Marko Haapala

Last night I was photographing fountains in Oulu when it got so cold up there a phenomenon resembling a horseshoe that I had to photograph it. Unfortunately, it was so terribly high in relation to the landscape and it was only possible to zoom in and the best form suffered a bit and soon it disappeared behind the trees. Then you know whether the so-called criteria for a horseshoe vortex, but let the experts figure out the rest. Beautiful clouds appeared after sunrise and soon the sky was completely cloudy and maybe the first night a little better conditions, so-called in terms of landscape pho...

Other special clouds

29.6.2023 at 01.45 - 02.00 - Oulu
Marko Haapala

Well, are they or aren't they? Of course, it must be noted that there was something to be filmed in any case when they caught my eye so interestingly, even though I stopped a little when I was filming something else entirely. There was something similar in the other direction, but there was no time to focus when you had to focus on filming something else entirely. However, there is that one bank of clouds a little ahead... However, the suggestion was to put it in skywatch, but suddenly they can be deleted if necessary. Well, seven hours passed as far as the night adventure was concerned an...

Pollen corona

17.6.2023 at 22.00 - 00.20 - Oulu
Marko Haapala

Huh? Once again, it's a bit challenging to define anything, but can't those who know know... The sea water was low so it was good to push far... The pollen ring is now quite clear and can be found there to be ticked off, but at the same time a lot more seemed to be visible, but on the other hand, because of the pollen ring, we were on the move filming. The strange pillar there was visible even when you shaded the sun with your palm. Of course, with these already tired eyes, you could still guess, but when it looked like there was even a lower pillar, and there was a halo on both sides,...

Volcanic/ash sunset

14.6.2023 at 22.00 - 02.50 - Oulu (IV)
Marko Haapala

Well, again challenging to perform the so-called reporting to Taivaanvaht. Can't the more educated know how to fix it? I started photographing birds already around 20:00 and the evening progressed quickly. Sometimes late in the evening, a circle of pollen around the sun, but I don't follow the time on the clock, so maybe the clock was on at the beginning of the observation, but no pictures were taken yet, we focused on photographing the seagulls in perfect lighting. The cargo ship that had appeared the night before left for the open sea, and then it was a hurry to immortalize the ship ...

Rare halos

26.5.2023 at 16.30 - 17.03 - Kempele (IV)
Marko Haapala

In the middle of photographing the birds, a halo appeared in the sky, which got better and better, and finally I had to first record it with my cell phone and finally run to my backpack to get a decent camera and still had time to record before the cloud arrived, when the halo faded. The horizon ring made a full circle and one 120° halo spot was visible. I wish I had time to run behind one of the barns for a better perspective, but I didn't have time to go any further than to cover up the sun.

Aurora rays

3.4.2023 at 22.00 - 23.30 - Kempele (III)
Marko Haapala

After all, it was evening again and apparently it was worth the tals in the field landscape. The perspectives were once again familiar, but it seems that the previous pictures, taken from the same places, are a bit dim when you start to look at them. Fortunately, more snow had time to come and with the blizzard, that is, covering the previous brownish marks in the wind, although now the animal marks can still be accepted. The fodder bales could have been a little closer, more perfectly placed... Like last winter, but maybe heaven will replace it in those pictures if you dare...

Aurora rays

1.4.2023 at 01.00 - 03.00 - Kempele (III)
Marko Haapala

Finally, after midnight, it cleared up and the arch appeared in the sky and a moment later again in a familiar spot within walking distance from home. Dim or bright northern lights at their best, find out about it again as a layman. Of course, the ski slope lights are on and the slope maintenance is in progress. Of course, it offered a new visual look to the already familiar perspective. Finally, the lights went dark and the normal mood continued and the rays of the aurora borealis were short-lived. The best seemed for a moment to be there in the direction of Oulu's light pollution and the...

Rocket-related clouds

29.3.2023 at 23.03 - 23.06 - Kempele (IV)
Marko Haapala

The weather forecast said it was cloudy and snowing. I found out nothing from the cloud maps, one showed one thing and the other another. I peeked out every now and then, but the artificial light pillars made me rush out. There was still an hour until the rocket launch. The pillars disappeared and grew stronger and faded and grew dim until they reached the zenith. It had time to get cloudy and clear and cloudy. There was 20 minutes to launch and it was snowing to the point that visibility collapsed. Faith refused to stop and suddenly the rain stopped and the clouds went away and the rocket app...

Half-sky auroras

23.3.2023 at 20.40 - 21.00 - Kempele (IV)
Marko Haapala

Stopped to cycle on top of the landscaped mound of earth in Linnakanka in Kempele. It's been some time since the last visit and I noticed that the youth had apparently burned a few coils planted as decorations, so it represents the objects that decorate the picture. Before the launch of the rocket, the sky was covered with clouds, and the other observer next to him also saw nothing but clouds. Ten minutes later the clouds opened appropriately and for a good 15 minutes there were dim pillars of light and Venus and the crescent moon and aurora borealis a little everywhere and I can't say...

Satellite

22.3.2023 at 01.50 - Kempele (II)
Marko Haapala

To the rhythm of the aurora borealis, it was getting colder outside and it was frosty and foggy as well. When photographing and enlarging the image, you could marvel at the string of lines. There, I had time to wonder during several pictures without really realizing anything, except that the queue so-called I got longer without realizing that the queue got shorter for the last picture. Fortunately, the pictures were not deleted immediately. It only became clear later that the Starlink satellites are in line to orbit the earth and luckily the exposure time was short so that they didn't end ...

Light pillars

8.3.2023 at 20.00 - 20.15 - Kempele (II)
Marko Haapala

A light surprise for light outdoor activities. Well, artificial light pillars only in a familiar perspective, but fortunately still decorated with Jupiter and Venus, although not so close anymore. However, I managed to take a few pictures until the pillars disappeared and I was in a hurry to cross the ditch on the field path. The area of the cargo terminal, so pillars often appear there, but not necessarily at all in the rest of the environment.

Cloudbow visible from the ground

1.3.2023 at 11.45 - 12.40 - Kempele (IV)
Marko Haapala

When walking home from the store, a glance behind the back and some arch. It was foggy at that point and the Rain Radar claimed that it wasn't raining in that direction. Not even a fog in sight, so I thought it might be a cloud arc. In the end, I got home and grabbed my backpack and walked again to the familiar northern lights photography spots during the day. I had time to take a few pictures with a tripod until it disappeared.

A fireball at night, brighter than a full moon

28.2.2023 at 20.50 - Kempele (III)
Marko Haapala

20:50:48 and the last time the camera clock was checked yesterday, so it's time to take the picture. I was just getting ready to shoot the possible northern lights, but the clouds were bothering me, even though I could see the green with its rays through the slits. Flipping through the cell phone, i.e. browsing the cloud map. Well, there are even bright lights and an upward gaze on the plane, but a ball of fire, i.e. a heavenly fan in layman's terms. Great brightness and it was red at the beginning and then green and yes, the moon turned pale and started to notice the old one and reali...

Half-sky auroras

15.2.2023 at 17.40 - 23.30 - Kempele (III)
Marko Haapala

The camera's clock was 10 s ahead of its time, but that did not prevent filming. Almost seven hours were spent in the field, and sometimes there is logging in the area. The best moment naturally came just before those clouds covered the sky, but I didn't have to talk until three in the morning. The perspectives were a bit challenging and the best was when there was an arc in the southern sky and in the northern sky and both started from the same place. The corona was also modest, and modestly dim rays were enough in one direction if the other from time to time. The best was the reddish...

M42

13.2.2023 at 18.00 - Kempele (IV)
Marko Haapala

As a child, you had to stare at the earth and the starry sky on the tin roof, then at the current location you could see a little more of them, even in winter. 30 years ago, the first camera was used to zoom towards the shape of Orion's hourglass, and there that reddish dot was visible as a blur and a little wider than the stars next to it. Time passed and slowly we got a little closer to the target, but the result was miserable and noisy and a disappointed photographer. Still, that time passed and the photographer also had time to develop during that time, in addition to everything else. ...
