Binocular comet ZTF

4.2.2023 at 18.30 - 18.40 - Kantvik (II)
Petteri Havukainen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

C/2022 E3 (ZTF) shot with Sigma 105mm and Canon Eos-6D, stack of about 30 images. Shot from a tripod, ISO 2500 and exposure times 4s and 2.5s. The moon dazzled quite badly, it was almost a full moon on Saturday

Rare halos

6.2.2023 at 22.10 - 00.10 - Juva (IV)
Petri Martikainen, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

The evening was quite clear and the Moon shone bright in the sky, disturbing the observation of the comet. In the lands of Iltakymme, weak clouds began to gather around the Moon, and with the side eye, they could be seen as rings. I took a stack of a hundred pictures and checked the situation at the computer. Somewhat unexpectedly, the pictures revealed a fire, so I took the camera back to work. In the first stack of hundred pictures, there seems to be a 23° slaika and an 18° ring and parhelias in addition to the basic ring. In the latter set, in addition to the basic ring and the upper side r...

A very faint surface halo stood out a little here and there. At one point on the surface of the road, the sparkle was clearly better, and even outside the 22° tire the sparkle was noticeable. There are a couple of small sets (pictures 16 and 11) with slightly different step marks, but in those maximum stacks, apart from the ring, nothing else came off but even more glitter on the outer edge of the ring. The surface from which that clip was recovered was very narrow.

A handsome surface halo dazzled the snow-covered lake ice. About a year ago, I last saw a surface halo at the same observation location.

Landscape image of a planet

Tuomas Salo, Ursa (Helsinki)

I photographed Venus with an iPhone 13 as a landscape planet image.

Binocular comet

6.2.2023 at 19.00 - Mäntyharju (I)
Markku Siljama, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

Comet update. Visible in the constellation Ajomie, couldn't be in an easier place. Not visible to the naked eye. Distance from Earth 49 million kilometers. In Figure 3, I determined the brightness of the comet with an unsharp focus of n 6.5 mag. Picture 4 bonus, I turned the camera to Pyhäselka towards the moonlight, fog further away, freezing 7 degrees, upper clouds.

Binocular comet ZTF

6.2.2023 at 18.30 - 19.00 - Kangasala, Sahalahti (II)
Jorma Mäntylä

I observed a ZTF comet for the third time this year. The comet is now mag 5. It was not distinguishable with the naked eye due to the moonlight and frost, and there was probably a faint aurora veil in the sky. With the camera, ZTF was found in Ajomiehe immediately inside the ϵ Aur triangle. At first I assumed that there would be nothing to shoot because of the moon, but the DSS image processing amazingly brought out the comet. The last image is one original unedited raw image. If the moonlight fades and the sky is clear, you can still get good pictures from this.

Pearl clouds

6.2.2023 at 18.01 - 18.25 - Pori (V)
Tuikku Asikainen, Porin Karhunvartijat

Now, the weather has been such that for the last week, pearly clouds and pearly browns pop up every now and then, so I too have rushed to the beaches at home around the time of the sunset, which seems to be even the smallest. The mother-of-pearl brown was dazzling in its own right, and the stripes of the mother-of-pearl cloud shimmered in colors of yellow, orange, purple, and everything in between. Huh, how happy such a sight makes a person!

I imaged the M42 Orion gas nebula by stacking 16 2 second exposures with DeepSkyStacker. As a bonus image, the Orion constellation as a landscape constellation.

Telescopic comet PANSTARRS

20.1.2023 at 21.31 - 21.52 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (III)
Kari Laihia, Toni Veikkolainen, Hannu Määttänen, Porin Karhunvartijat

Comet C/2022 A2 (PANSTARRS) was imaged on the first night of the 2023 January talcos. The comet was discovered by the Pan-STARRS 2 telescope Haleakala (F52 – Pan-STARRS 2, Haleakala) on January 10, 2022 as a 20.5mag target. In Perhel, the comet will be 1.867au on February 18, 2023 and at its closest on January 17 at 1.613au. When we photographed it, it was at a distance of 1.6163au in Dragon and at the same time at its brightest estimated at T9.5 mag. The lights of a nearby cell phone base station mast caused strong artifacts in the pictures. Probably a weak cloud of fog at a height of about 5...

Rare halos

4.2.2023 at 18.30 - 01.30 - Jämsä (IV)
Jari Luomanen, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

Mikkilä and I were team hunting for a long time. The predictions promised a slab crystal inferno, and we got something of a kind. First there was a good set with lower side suns and Lowitzes. In addition to the concave and convex Lowitz shape, a divergent tail (i.e. caused by non-parallel light) seems to come from the lower side suns, and in the same pictures there is of course also a so-called a superlamp (i.e. relative to the divergent light of the upper sun) as an extension of the pillar.* The images of the Lowitz phase (the two images where the lower side suns are sharp) have some funny ju...

Rare halos

4.2.2023 at 18.30 - 01.30 - Jämsä (IV)
Marko Mikkilä

Years of dreaming about a halo observation trip came true last Saturday at short notice. The forecast showed excellent weather for Himos and at the same time the full moon was beautiful in the sky. So let's go. Jari Luomanen and I booked a cottage as a base for the halo trip. The evening started around half past seven when we set out to explore the area. The first blow resulted in a return trip to the cabin when someone forgot Blokker at the cabin. (Me) Around eight in the evening it started to happen. Ice fog formed in an area of a few kilometers and we found a good dark field where we fi...

Binocular comet ZTF

26.1.2023 at 21.35 - Muurame, Verkkoniemi (III)
Arto Oksanen, Jyväskylän Sirius

I photographed the comet from my own yard when the sky cleared after a long period of clouds. One 30 second exposure. The street lights were a nuisance. The comet was easily visible with binoculars (10x45), but not with the naked eye.

6.2.2023 at 09.30 - 09.45 - Turku,Ruissalo (II)
Paula Mattila

There didn't seem to be any halos in the clouds in the morning, but there was a frozen and snow-covered cove on the shore of the Ruissalo National Park where a surface halo could be seen.

6.2.2023 at 05.26 - Kokkola (III)
Pentti Ketola, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

There was a full moon in Kokkola and a quiet night, so I started the timer photography session at half past four and there were 681 raps. Otava aligned this satellite quite nicely, but the direction did not match Heavens Above's drawings..

Here last summer, Veikko M. said that you can see mirages in all seasons, so I headed for the sea ice when the first pleasant frosty weather was merciful after the dark autumn. Yes, there on the horizon you could clearly see mirages in the shipping lane at the distant islands.

Weak/variable cloudiness and a light drizzle of snow in Nilsiä was caused by these things. It lasted about half an hour, slowly getting worse.

Rare halos

6.2.2023 at 09.07 - 10.13 - Kuusamo, Rukatunturi (IV)
Jani Päiväniemi, Ursa (Pohjois-Suomi)

When I came to work, I went to photograph Juhannuskallio and went on a gondola ride and photographed the changes in the ice fog from the window. Moilanen's arc was visible from time to time and sometimes there was also a glimpse of a parry. It's as if the death had momentarily been visible on the 46' overhead.
